A Traveler’s Guide to THM

Get your motor running……it’s road trip time!!!  Be prepared to make it work for your on plan eating, not against your on plan eating.
a road trip

Sure road-tripping is fun, the open road the passing scenery…..but what about when you get hungry? That’s no problem if you don’t care about what you put in your body.  Just grab a bag of chips….a can of soda and you’re set.  But Wait!!!!  That’s going to wreak havoc on your blood sugars, your insulin is going to sky rocket and you’re going to crash (I know poor choice of words, but bare with me here).  So what can you eat that won’t leave you bottoming out and falling asleep at the wheel?  Something that won’t be stored as fat and make you feel gross.  Well, that’s what I’m hear to share with you, there’s LOTS of great food ideas!!!

We travel by car quite a bit and prepping is the name of the game.  Taking a few moments to plan out some ‘on plan’ (learn more about Trim Healthy Mama plan here) THM goodies can make a world of difference in just how you feel when the road is done.

my top 3

Here are are top 3 suggestions to consider while you travel.

  1. Get a great travel cooler: I love my travel cooler (buy here), its compact, it’s mobile, and it doesn’t take up the space of a teenager like many other over sized coolers.  For that reason alone it goes with us even on beach days.  It holds lots of goodies that need to stay cold and it’s well laid out storage areas make for great ease of access.
  2. Hydrate without having to pit stop every 45 minutes.  So drink smaller amounts of fluid over a longer period of time.  For instance, keep a bottle of water or good girl moonshine with you for sipping, not guzzling.  Try to avoid drinking large cups of coffee, remember caffeine is a diuretic, and makes you need those frequent pit stops. So try to get a smaller size cup when traveling to reduce the amount of stops.  Using a straw is recommended…it keeps your eyes on the road and your palate quenched.
  3. Prepare snacks and treats ahead of time that will nourish your body and help you get through the long road ahead.  This saves time and money!  My family makes a 16 hour van tip almost every year and each time I’ve packed meals and snacks to save money and help our bodies feel great by eating foods that are good for us and on plan.  I make my salted caramel skinny chocolate (keep in the cooler), chocolate chip muffins, sandwiches, I take along nuts and seeds, baked thin cheese chips on plan protein bars like Quest, whey protein shakes (just a mix of almond milk, cocoa powder and stevia), cut up vegetables, deli meats, boiled eggs, and cookies.

There’s no need to blow your on plan eating just because you’re on the road.  Keep your 3 hour guideline in check by making sure you are satisfied with lots of proteins to help your brain stay sharp and your belly full.  You’ll see just how great reaching your destination feels without blowing off your THM plan way of eating.  Bon Voyage!
